Week 73 01/07/2015 - Green and Lush Underfoot and Overhead

Photo Blog Week 73 - Wed 1 July 2015

Sorry I'm late, it's been a busy week. Also, there will be no 'Wednesday Office' blog for Wed 8th July due to work commitments.

A different week this week, pleasantly warm but overcast with a few threats of rain that came to nought in the morning then hot and humid after lunch.  My mileage was well down as I was otherwise occupied after a shout from Delta Barry as to whether I could give him a hand.

Properties in the Park are not connected to main sewers and there are several septic tanks which need to be maintained. Problems with pipework meant contractors hand digging a 30ft run near Red Lane Cottage but the route was through metre high nettles and grass. Barry had got the industrial strength strimmer but vegetation was so dense that each sweep stopped progress so I grabbed a rake and as he strimmed, I cleared. Heavy hot work after which we moved onto another tank near Lyme Park Cottages and cleared around the containing fence. Hot, thirsty and hungry we left the inside of the fence for after lunch.

route: Staff Car Park; The Stables; Estate Office; The Stables; Admissions

After bumping into Barry, I litter picked in front of the North Face and below the Stables until he was ready with the 4x4 then we drove from The Stables to Admissions hut

Clearing started on left next to Elmerhurst tank

route: (Drive) Admissions; Timber Yard Café (lunch stop)

After lunch I set off staying local to the Main Drive awaiting for Barry's radio call which came as I surfaced from Crow Wood so I met him by the drive and we headed back to Elmerhurst and finished the strimming.

route:  Timber Yard Café; Picnic Area; Crow Wood; Main Drive pickup

Yellow Flagg Iris by the stream

The Orchid I discovered last week still flowing though past its best

Nature's Artwork: extraordinary root structure inside a large beech tree.
The mind can create all sorts of images staring at this.

route: Main Drive pickup (Drive to) Admissions; Lyme Park Cottages tank

Strimming finished I headed of in normal 'Patrol' mode through the woods.

route: Lyme Park Cottages tank; Elmerhurst Wood; Crow Wood

Foxgloves are at their peak at the moment.
When you see a bank of Foxgloves, notice how the flowers are only on the sun facing side of the stem

Raspberries
Raspberries and Blackberries though similar fruit and leaf shape differ in the way they grow. The Raspberries are on upright 'canes' unlike the crawling spiky brambles of the Blackberry.

Undergrowth is thick and lush now as summer progresses

Woodland path continues through Elmerhurst Wood with a little sun breaking through

Coming out of Elmerhurst Wood and looking up across grassland to The Cage

The path continues parallel to the Main Drive and above the boundary wall

The sight of running water is pleasant as it is now a hot and humid day and the effort of clearing followed by the uphill route from the North of the Park is wearing

route: Crow Wood;  Main Car Park; Fallow Deer Sanctuary (behind gardens); Hamper's Bridge; Turfhouse Meadow; Staff Car Park (end)

Black Headed Gulls sharing a perch over the Mill Pond

A particularly nice foxglove backed by bracken

Classic view of the South Face and Reflection Lake

The Orangery peeping between the trees across the gardens

Path under mature Beech trees behind the gardens heading to Hamper's Bridge

Lantern Wood and the Moor across the grass and rush of Turfhouse Meadow

The Lantern lit up with the 'Distant Drumbeat' installation

Elder Flower cordial anyone?  I personally favour waiting for Elder Berry Wine.
